María Bugallo receives the Almirall Award from the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona for a work in applied statistics
The researcher was recognised within the framework of the ‘XIX Concurso STUDENT d’Estadística Aplicada’ for a work based on the attention paradigm, in which she managed to complete a screening of patients with atrial fibrillation through the automatic classification of electrocardiogram records.
The Almirall Award comes after overcoming the challenge proposed by the competition organisers, a challenge in which the candidates had to carry out an analysis of a data set related to a real problem, which they had to solve through an original work on a free topic. María Bugallo had no doubts: “I’m quite determined,” she jokes. “I thought our idea was original and interesting, so I didn’t hesitate to tell my supervisor about it.” This proposal ended up winning the competition, developing a neural network system for screening patients with atrial fibrillation, which was eventually recognised as the best work in biostatistics.
“When I submitted the work, I neither expected nor ruled out winning because, in fact, I knew I would win in both ways: the document and the corrections by my supervisor, Paulo Félix, helped me a lot as support material for writing my master’s thesis,” she explains. “I am very grateful to the organising institutions; it is rewarding to feel that effort, often scarcely valued, also brings rewards,” says the CiTIUS researcher.
