Mateo Valero, director of the National Supercomputing Center, will give a lecture next Friday at the CiTIUS of the USC

The event, jointly organized by the Singular Research Center in Intelligent Technologies (CiTIUS) and the Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA), will make it possible to learn about the latest breakthroughs in the field of High Performance Computing to accelerate scientific progress.

Next Friday, October 29, starting at 12:30, CiTIUS will host a lecture by Mateo Valero, founder and director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and one of the leading figures in the field of supercomputing worldwide. The lecture, organized in collaboration with the Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA), will take place in the CiTIUS assembly hall until capacity is reached, and will be streamed online for those who cannot attend in person.

Throughout his talk, Mateo Valero will summarize the current situation and the transformations that will take place in the near future in high performance computing systems (HPC), including their strong impact on scientific research.

The capacity for massive computation has made it possible to use multiple techniques such as neural networks applied to real-world problems, giving rise to what we call Artificial Intelligence (AI), capable of making inferences that humans would never be able to perform. Significant advances are also being made in quantum computing, based on the use of quantum mechanical phenomena to manipulate information, and with enormous potential for new transformations in the field of HPC. All these advances can help, or in some cases even replace, classical techniques.

About the speaker

Mateo Valero is the founder and director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. A professor since 1974 and a Full Professor of Computer Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia since 1983, his research focuses on the architecture of computers and supercomputers. He has published approximately 700 articles, has contributed to the organization of more than 300 international conferences, and has given more than 700 talks. Among his awards are the three most important worldwide in his field: the Eckert-Mauchly Award (2007), granted by IEEE-ACM; the Seymour Cray Award (2015), granted by IEEE; and the Charles Babbage Award (2017), granted by IEEE.
