Ramón López de Mántaras, president of the CiTIUS External Scientific Committee, receives the CPEIG Honorary Fellow Award
The presentation took place at the gala of the '18th Night of Galician Computer Engineering', held on Friday June 12 in Santiago.
The Professional Association of Computer Engineers of Galicia (CPEIG) awarded the Honorary Membership to Ramón López de Mántaras, president of the External Scientific Committee of CiTIUS, for being a pioneer of artificial intelligence in Spain and Europe, researching the field since 1975 and for being the founder and director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of the CSIC (IIIA‑CSIC), one of the reference institutions in this field.
The president of the CPEIG, Fernando Suárez, highlights that throughout his professional career López de Mántaras has made a decisive contribution to the development of research in artificial intelligence, to the promotion of the international scientific community and to the transfer of knowledge to society. Beyond his more than 300 scientific publications and his prestigious international recognitions, the College honors the founder of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of the CSIC “for his commitment to an ethical, humanistic and responsible vision of technology.”
“Author of more than 300 scientific publications and awarded some of the most prestigious international prizes in artificial intelligence, including the Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award from the AAAI, the EurAI Distinguished Service Award and the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award, his work has helped place Spain on the global map of artificial intelligence,” says Suárez.

“I understand this appointment not only as an assessment of my professional career, but also as a collective recognition of all the people with whom I have shared projects, ideas and efforts over the years. Nothing I have achieved would have been possible without the collaboration of colleagues, researchers, students and professionals who, from different fields, have contributed to the progress of our discipline. I take this distinction as an incentive to continue working in favor of computer science and artificial intelligence, which contribute to knowledge, social progress and collective well‑being,” he states.

In addition, López de Mántaras emphasizes his close relationship with CiTIUS (Singular Research Centre on Intelligent Technologies of the University of Santiago de Compostela), of which he has been a member of its Scientific Committee for more than ten years and which he currently has the privilege of presiding over. “My connection with this center has allowed me to get to know up close the excellence of its research work and its important role in consolidating Galicia as a reference in research and technological innovation. For this reason, I also consider this recognition as a sign of affection toward a scientific community with which I feel especially connected,” he adds.

Ramón López de Mántaras (Sant Vicenç de Castellet, 1952) holds a PhD in Applied Physics (specializing in automation) from the University of Toulouse III (France), a master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of California‑Berkeley (USA) and a PhD in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He is an emeritus research professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), which he founded and directed. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Technology Sydney and at Western Sydney University. He has been a professor at the Faculty of Informatics of Barcelona and a chair at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris. He was editor‑in‑chief of the European AI journal (AI Communications) and associate editor of the world’s most prestigious AI journal (Artificial Intelligence Journal). Author of more than 300 scientific papers and the popular science books on artificial intelligence 'Que sabemos de' (Los Libros de la Catarata, 2017) and '100 cosas que deberías saber sobre inteligencia artificial' (Cossetània, 2023).
He has received, among others, the following awards: Ciutat de Barcelona Research Award (1982), Swets & Zeitlinger Award from the International Computer Music Association (1997), Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award from the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (2011), Distinguished Award from the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (2016), Donald E. Walker Distinguished Service Award from the International Association for Artificial Intelligence (2017) and the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award in Mathematics and Information and Communication Technologies (2018). He is an honorary member of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence and of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. He is also a member of various advisory committees for public institutions and companies in the United States and Europe (in particular for the German and French governments) on issues related to AI. He coordinated the working group that developed the AI Research Strategy for the Ministry of Science of the Spanish government. He currently researches in analogy‑based reasoning and in causal and transfer learning.
