Trustworthy: 10 universities create the 'ConfIA' network to promote reliable and responsible AI
USC participates through CiTIUS in this new national alliance, which will promote joint research projects, the securing of competitive funding, mobility and the attraction of talent, and the transfer of knowledge to society.
A new network to strengthen scientific collaboration, coordinate strategic initiatives and contribute to the development of responsible, reliable artificial intelligence aligned with European values. Ten universities from Spain have just established ConfIA, the Interuniversity Network of Centers of Excellence in Trustworthy and Responsible Artificial Intelligence, which brings together some of the country's leading artificial intelligence research centers.
CiTIUS adds capabilities with nine universities to promote trustworthy, responsible artificial intelligence aligned with European values
The initiative, in which the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) participates through CiTIUS, will be carried out through joint research projects, participation in national and international calls, training and doctoral programs or staff mobility, as well as through the organization of conferences and scientific activities, or the preparation of joint reports. Among ConfIA’s main objectives are promoting the research, development and responsible use of artificial intelligence, with the aim of creating robust, safe, transparent, explainable, sustainable systems that respect privacy; facilitating collaboration between centers and teams by driving joint initiatives; boosting the acquisition of competitive funding; promoting mobility and attracting research talent, as well as sharing infrastructures and resources, strengthening knowledge transfer and collaboration with companies, public administrations and society in general.
Alongside CiTIUS (a center co-financed by the European Union through the Galicia FEDER Programme 2021–2027), the list of affiliated institutions is completed by the Centre de Recerca Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDEAI-UPC) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; CITIC of the University of A Coruña; the DaSCI (Data Science and Computational Intelligence) Research Center of the University of Granada; the R&D&I Center in Artificial Intelligence of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid; the Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (VRAIN) of the Universitat Politècnica de València; the HiTZ Center – Basque Center for Language Technology of the University of the Basque Country; the Center for Digital Intelligence (CiDi) of the University of Alicante; the Andalusian Interuniversity Institute on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DaSCI-UJA) of the University of Jaén; and the University Research Institute for Computer Engineering of the University of Seville.
ConfIA is born to reinforce collaborative AI research through joint projects, talent attraction and knowledge transfer in the service of society
The network will have a Coordination Committee, made up of the rectors of the universities, and a Scientific‑Technical Steering Committee, composed of representatives of the various participating centers, which will be responsible for coordinating ConfIA’s research activities and strategic initiatives. The creation of ConfIA represents a step forward in the coordination of Spanish artificial intelligence research. Through this alliance, the participating universities aim to strengthen their scientific capabilities, increase the impact of their research and promote greater national and international projection of the artificial intelligence developed in Spain, while at the same time contributing to the advancement of trustworthy, responsible AI in the service of society.
