A report by IDEGA, coordinated by the director of CiTIUS, considers AI as an opportunity for the Galician economy
The authors relate the use of artificial intelligence to an improvement in productivity and place Galicia in a favorable position to integrate AI into its productive fabric
The Galician Institute of Studies and Development (IDEGA) has published a special report on the impact of artificial intelligence on the Galician economy. The report, coordinated by CiTIUS director Senén Barro, shows that productivity in companies improves when AI complements people and processes, but weakens when there is no redesign of the workflow. Barro argues that «professionals should not be dispensed with, but rather enhanced with the capabilities offered by AI».
In Galicia, the implementation of AI remains below the national average (10.3% versus 11.4%) and that of the European Union (13.5%). «We are not so interested in the number of companies that have adopted AI, but in whether they are profiting from it. SMEs should rethink how to integrate AI to innovate, what the proper use is; there is a whole path of value-added adoptions», Barro explains. To achieve this, he stresses the need for companies to contact experts who can provide them with advice since, at present, the presence of AI talent in companies is limited (1.89% of ICT specialists).
«Professionals should not be dispensed with, but rather enhanced with the capabilities offered by AI»
Experts view positively the fact that Galicia already has «all» the necessary instruments for the adoption of AI with an impact on productivity, such as the ICT sector, R&D activity and talent training in public universities.
What remains to be done
The report AI in the Galician economy reflects on the law for the development and promotion of artificial intelligence in Galicia (LIAG), which, Barro adds, must clarify aspects in its regulation, respecting the European and Spanish framework, in order to provide certainty to the Galician economy.
«We must commit to trustworthy AI: explainability, human oversight, safety. Trustworthy AI is profitable»
The authors recommend the creation of secure platforms for data exchange between companies and the public sector; a program to promote AI adoption in SMEs; intensive programs for skills improvement and professional retraining; strengthening managerial capabilities; creating a national-regional system of comparable and open statistics to enable transparent comparison; and closing the gap in marketing, sales and R&D, where Galicia has lower AI usage.
Now that the professional world is changing, AI research carried out by organizations such as CiTIUS (a center co-funded by the European Union through the Galicia Feder 2021–2027 Program) is essential for developing technologies that are in line with professional ethics and that add value to human work. «We must commit to trustworthy AI: explainability, human oversight, safety. Trustworthy AI is profitable», the report concludes.
