The CAME&IA Chair is committed to AI as a driver of transformation in personalized medicine.

USC and Plexus Tech, with the support of the Secretariat of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, presented today this initiative led by CiTIUS, unique in Spain in the personalization of care processes.

The University of Santiago de Compostela and the technology company Plexus Tech officially presented the Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Personalized Precision Medicine (CAME&IA) on May 28. The initiative, led by the Singular Center for Research in Intelligent Technologies (CiTIUS) and realized under the auspices of the European Union, which co-finances the center's activities through the Galicia Feder 2021-2027 Program, places Galicia at the forefront of the application of Artificial Intelligence in the healthcare field.

The chair, funded with 1,200,000 euros, is the only one in Spain exclusively dedicated to AI applied to personalized medicine and is supported by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service. In fact, the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, Ms. María González Veracruz, participated in the official presentation of the chair this Thursday.

Once the institutional ceremony was over, the Secretary of State visited the CiTIUS facilities, where she had the opportunity to learn firsthand about various lines of research currently being developed at the center. During the visit, she was accompanied by the center’s scientific director, Senén Barro, as well as several of the researchers responsible for the projects, who showed her the laboratories and the latest advances in artificial intelligence developed at the center.

At the end of her visit, the Secretary of State highlighted the strategic role of CiTIUS, stating that "for Spain to be a protagonist in the digital revolution, there are two essential factors: the public university, as a source of innovation, knowledge, research, and development at the service of society; and talent. Talent of people like Senén Barro and the CiTIUS team. Because this cutting-edge center of excellence has had a reputable international trajectory for years, being a reference." In the words of the State Government representative, "this combination of research and talent is what we wanted to promote from the Government of Spain with a global strategy that includes initiatives promoted by the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, such as the ENIA Chairs."

CAME&IA: generating knowledge for personalized medicine

During its first four years of activity, the CAME&IA Chair will focus on generating new knowledge through the use of intelligent technologies and the advanced exploitation of medical data to improve clinical decision-making.

The project has a committee of guarantors formed by leaders in biomedical and technological research, such as the directors of CiTIUS, CiMUS, CITMAga, IDIS, and the Galician Public Foundation for Genomic Medicine. Additionally, it will collaborate with the Galicia Supercomputing Center (CESGA) and various public and private agents in the health sector.

Among its lines of research, it will focus on machine learning and predictive models for treatment personalization; medical image processing and biomedical signal analysis; or the integration of multimodal data to improve diagnostics and treatments.

The chair will also develop a wide range of training programs, with special emphasis on the ethical and legal aspects of the use of AI in medicine, and will promote the transfer of knowledge to society and collaboration with national and international centers.
