“Can machines think?” Senén Barro presents his new essay on artificial intelligence in Compostela
The scientific director of CiTIUS will present his new book “Can Machines Think?” next Wednesday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m., a reflection on artificial intelligence and the conceptual and social challenges that accompany its development.
An essay to reflect on what artificial intelligence is—and is not—in a context of accelerated technological transformation. Next Wednesday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m., at the Follas Novas Bookshop, Senén Barro will present his new book Can Machines Think?, a reflection on artificial intelligence and the conceptual and social challenges that accompany its development.
Throughout the essay, the author poses central questions around this discipline: what AI really is and how it emerged, how the human brain and a computer are similar—and how they differ—or how far machines can go in their learning process and decision-making. The work combines popularization and critical analysis at a time when these technologies have a particularly prominent role.
Senén Barro Ameneiro is a physicist and professor in the area of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at USC, as well as scientific director of CiTIUS (a center co-funded by the European Union through the Galicia Feder 2021–2027 Program). He was rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela between 2002 and 2010.
The presentation will feature the participation of Tania Fernández Lombao, journalist and professor at USC, and Henrique Alvarellos, editor.
