Tomás Fernández Pena
I got my degree in Physics in 1989 at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), where I got my Ph.D. in 1994. From 1990 until 1994 I worked as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of A Coruña (Spain). From 1994, I am an associate professor in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science of the University of Santiago de Compostela. From 2010, I am a Senior Researcher of the Research Center in Intelligent Technologies (CiTIUS) of the University of Santiago de Compostela. Also, I am Senior Member of IEEE and Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Computers and IEEE Access journals (both Q1 in JCR 2017).
My main research lines include the high-performance computing in general, the architecture of parallel systems, the development of parallel algorithms for clusters and supercomputers, the improvement of the performance of scientific applications in general, the development of applications and middleware for cloud, the use of Big Data technologies for scientific application (bioinformatics, cheminformatics, etc.) and the improvement of quantum computing simulators.
Funded international research stays longer than 4 weeks:
- Parallel Algorithms Research Centre, Loughborough University of Technology, UK (years 90-91, 36 weeks, predoctoral grant from Spanish Ministry of Education).
- Innovative Computing Laboratories, Computer Science Department, University of Tennessee, USA (year 1995, 36 weeks, postdoctoral grant from Spanish Ministry of Education)
- Computer Science Department, University of Illinous at Urbana-Champaing, USA (year 2017, 16 weeks, Fulbright/Ministry of Education visiting scholar award)
I have gained recognition for four six-years periods of international-quality research (sexenios de investigación) and I have supervised seven PhD Thesis. I have published 43 international journal papers, of which 33 are in JCR journals, and more than 100 contributions in international and national conferences. I have been principal investigator in 3 research projects funded by the Xunta de Galicia and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and member of the research team of 31 research project funded by the EU, the CICYT, and the Xunta de Galicia. I have also been principal investigator in 6 R&D contracts with enterprises and/or public administrations and have collaborated in other 14 R&D contracts. I am also a member of several national and international research networks.
