Lecture: «University Spinouts as a Commercialization Strategy for University Intellectual Property»

Spinouts started by faculty and/or graduating students are an effective way to transfer the technology to market. In this lecture, Dr. Bellisario will talk about benefits as well as some pitfalls of this strategy based on our personal experience. Some tactics to mitigate and avoid pitfalls will be discussed, as well as the story of some successful ventures will be shared.

About the speaker

Dr. Afarin Bellisario is currently the technology licensing officer in charge of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s IP portfolio in Electronics, Communications, and Semiconductors encompassing over 500 inventions.  In over three decades of professional experience, Dr. Bellisario has held executive strategy, marketing, and technical positions with Intel Corp., Analog Devices, BBN (now part of Raytheon), Booz-Allan and Hamilton, Shawmut Advanced Materials, and Fonix. She is the founder of Transtrategy Inc., a consulting firm specializing in commercializing technology in advanced materials and semiconductors. Her major clients include investment firms, major manufacturers of semiconductor and materials, prominent management consulting firms, venture capitalist, as well as two major universities.
