PhD Defense: 'Design of New High-Efficiency Silicon Carbide-Based Laser Power Converters'

This thesis explores two routes to enhance the efficiency of LPC technology. First, the incorporation of three high-bandgap semiconductors as base materials for LPCs within the common hLPC architecture: the Silicon Carbide (SiC) polytypes 3C, 4H, and 6H. Second, the implementation of these materials in advanced LPC architectures designed to minimize series resistance losses, namely the vertical Laser Power Converters (vLPC) and the Vertical Epitaxial Hetero-Structure Architecture (VEHSA). Additionally, this second route involved the development of optimization techniques for the VEHSA architecture. The presented work paves the way for efficiently transmitting ultra-high laser power densities.
