Galicia launches its Artificial Intelligence strategy: “EGIA 2030, towards an Intelligent Galicia”

*The CiTIUS scientific director is taking part as an invited speaker in the launch of EGIA, the regional commitment to Artificial Intelligence (AI), which will guide public policies in the Autonomous Community over the coming years and will mobilise more than 330 million euros between 2021 and 2030.*

“It is clear that this has come to stay, to transform society in the coming years and decades.” The president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, stated during the closing of the event that artificial intelligence will play “a crucial role” and will change “not only the way we work, interact or do business, but probably the way we live,” he said.

The Galician Artificial Intelligence Strategy (EGIA) will mobilise more than 330 million euros from the regional government up to 2030 and will turn Galicia into an intelligent region, contributing to the EU’s digital sovereignty in the face of other competitors. There are currently 258 active research projects in the field of AI in Galicia, a figure that will increase by 20% by 2030 thanks to the implementation of EGIA. The number of teaching professionals trained in digital skills in artificial intelligence will also rise by 50%.

A regulatory framework based on ethics and respect for privacy

The president of the Xunta also announced that the approval of this strategy will provide Galicia with a regulatory framework for the control and ethical advancement of data processing. With the launch of EGIA, the regional government is taking on a driving role in increasing investment in artificial intelligence, as well as in preparing citizens for socioeconomic changes within an appropriate ethical and legal framework. In this regard, AI will be at the service of a knowledge-based economy to address Galicia’s imminent challenges, such as the needs arising from the pandemic, demographic change or the ecological transition.

EGIA will align Galicia’s economic needs with its research and innovation capabilities, and with the needs of the public and private sectors. It will promote the use of artificial intelligence in key sectors of the Galician economy, improve the provision of services such as healthcare and social policy, enhance cultural heritage and tourism, and support Galician SMEs in their digital transformation processes.
