CiTIUS establishes its new Business and Social Council

CiTIUS convened its recently created Business and Social Council, to which it presented its latest scientific and technological results in a conference aimed at seeking new collaboration opportunities and at applying intelligent technologies for the benefit of society.

The Singular Research Centre in Intelligent Technologies (CiTIUS) at the University of Santiago de Compostela held, on Thursday 15 April 2021, the first meeting of its new Business and Social Council. “This new council significantly strengthens the business side, but above all it includes a social dimension, through organisations strongly committed to the use of technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, for the common good”, according to statements by the scientific director of CiTIUS, Senén Barro. “One of the great values of this council is the diversity and quality of its members, who represent everything from small to large companies, both Galician and multinational, as well as venture capital initiatives and organisations that work to promote trustworthy Artificial Intelligence or innovation”, Barro says.

The council’s functions include: establishing new forms of collaboration in the areas of human resources, training and the transfer of technology to the productive sector, as well as setting up a communication channel to identify common interests to be explored, in addition to developing sponsorship schemes and private funding.

This meeting also served to introduce the new members who joined the council. Among them are: Fundación Cotec, Mundi Ventures, Unirisco, OdiseIA, Situm and Televés, and in an individual capacity: Nuria Oliver, co-founder of the ELLIS Alicante Foundation, Andrés García-Rodeja, an expert in big data, and David Pascual, an expert in innovation and technology transfer. All of them will join Accenture, DXC Technology, Indra, Plexus and the Clúster TIC Galicia, which were already members of the council.

The event, chaired by Senén Barro Ameneiro and Paula López Martínez, deputy director of CiTIUS, also served to present first-hand the centre’s most recent activity and some of its latest achievements in areas such as efficient processing of LiDAR data and photogrammetry images, detection and tracking in video images, and Social Minder, a tool for real-time analysis of content on social media. The meeting also included a presentation of the new CiTIUS spin-off, InVerbis Analytics, by its CEO, Gonzalo Martín.
