CiTIUS joins the global outreach event "G-Night" this Friday
CiTIUS will bring to the *"European Researchers' Night"* (G-Night) a series of outreach activities presenting some of the centre’s current research lines.
Under the slogan "Creative consciences", this Friday 24 September sees the celebration of the European Researchers’ Night, an event that aims to bring scientific research closer to society as a whole, "in a simple, fun and interactive way", explains its coordinator at USC, José Antonio Costoya. This scientific outreach event, in which various USC centres and research groups take part, is held simultaneously in cities all over Europe on the last Friday in September. Through a wide-ranging programme of activities, the organisers aim to "show how we work and raise interest and awareness about the importance of the scientific field, both applied and basic", continues Professor Costoya. The event will take place on 24 September from 18:00 to 21:30 in the garden of the Colegio de Fonseca and its surroundings (Santiago de Compostela), and from 18:00 to 22:00 in the Vello Cárcere in Lugo.
Regarding CiTIUS’s participation in this event, the proposed activities will include several demos and workshops:
- Robotics demo: a selection of current research in human–robot interaction and robotic manipulation will be presented using a robotic arm controlled by a console.
- Can you beat a car controlled by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a race? A Scalextric race between two cars, one equipped with AI and the other controlled by a person using a handset.
- "CystAnalyser": workshop in which different cells will be identified and measured using the CystAnalyser tool, software developed at CiTIUS in collaboration with the NefroCHUS laboratory of the IDIS Foundation in Santiago, which helps in designing drugs against polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder.
- MeteoText (European project NL4XAI - GA 860621): discover the application that automatically translates short-term weather forecasts into natural language, based on the prediction data used by MeteoGalicia.
- European project MENELAOS-NT (NT - GA 860370): digital cameras (like those in our mobile phones) allow us to capture a two-dimensional representation of the world around us... but our environment is three-dimensional, not a flat image. This demo will present a camera capable of capturing three-dimensional images by recording the "time of flight" of the photons that reach each pixel of the camera.
- "Copying the brain" (European project MISEL - GA 101016734): the MISEL project focuses on developing more complex, low-power vision and image-capture systems that imitate the brain, exploiting a broader range of biological principles at the hardware level: the adaptability of the human eye, learning, and the reasoning involved in the "conscious" decision-making carried out by the cerebral cortex, etc.
