Senén Barro delivers a series of lectures on Artificial Intelligence at CaixaForum Madrid

The scientific director of CiTIUS will give a new series of talks between Monday 19 and Wednesday 21 April, sponsored by the prestigious lecture programme “Clases magistrales Cátedra Fundación La Caixa”.

“Artificial Intelligence in a society of people, machines, and also pandemics”. This is the title of the new series of lectures that will be given next week in Madrid.

The aim of this series, in the words of the speaker, is “to provide a vision of more than 360º, since, in addition to looking up and down, all around and as far as our sight reaches, imagination allows us to look even much further”. It is a reflection based on introspection, since, as Barro states, “what is more, we will also look inside the machine that sustains that imagination: our brain. That introspection is something that only we can do”, he reflects.

AI: the initials of the future

Everything suggests that the social and economic impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be of such magnitude that many experts believe it is no exaggeration to call it “the electricity of the 21st century”. In fact, it is already very present in multiple fields: Internet searches, email management, financial services, image recognition, automatic translation between languages… and, of course, in issues related to Covid-19. For Senén Barro, “We are moving towards a society in which natural and artificial intelligence will coexist; machines, increasingly capable, will have to be trustworthy and their design and use should be people‑centred and at our service. It seems like common sense, but for this to be the case, researchers, companies, governments and society in general, in addition to worrying about it, must also take action.” For this to happen, all of us need to inform and train ourselves: “If AI is destined to be the electricity of the 21st century, it is better not to live in the shadows,” Barro concludes.
