Senén Barro receives the National Computer Science Award at the official ceremony organized by SCIE and the BBVA Foundation
*The scientific director of CiTIUS, professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Santiago de Compostela, received last night in Madrid the award that recognizes his research career at the ceremony for the 2020–2021 Sociedad Científica Informática de España – BBVA Foundation Research Awards.*
To illustrate this need, the former rector of the University of Santiago (2002–2010) gives an example from the healthcare sector: “it is very common for a patient to say ‘In the last few weeks I have had frequent pain’ or ‘Shortly after the test I noticed these symptoms’. These are imprecise expressions that people easily incorporate into decision-making… for machines, however, it is more difficult; we need to find strategies to transfer this imprecision to the computational realm,” he explains.
Regarding the near future, the USC professor concludes that “AI is the most transformative technology developed to date, and only if we commit to trustworthy AI and the common good will we amplify its benefits and mitigate its possible harms.” A maxim that, in the words of Senén Barro, “has always guided the work of the Intelligent Systems Group, mine in particular, and which CiTIUS now also proudly upholds.”
