Xunta and USC organise a public event to involve citizens in the 'Nos Project', artificial intelligence at the service of the Galician language

The Fontán Building of the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia will host on Monday a meeting in which the details of this initiative, which is being developed to achieve the total inclusion of the Galician language in the digital and technological world, will be announced. The event will count with the participation, among others, of the special commissioner for the Alliance for the New Language Economy of the Spanish Government, as well as those responsible for the development of other similar projects in other official languages. People and organisations, both public and private, interested in getting to know about the project and its evolution, and, even collaborating in it, will be able to attend.

The Regional Government (Xunta) and the University of Santiago organize next Monday an Open Day to the general public, universities, companies and public administrations around the Nos Project of artificial intelligence at the service of the Galician language , the initiative on which both institutios are working at present to achieve a total inclusion of Galician in the digital and technological world.

The meeting will start at 9:00 a.m. in the Fontán Building of the Cidade da Cultura, and it will feature a round table and various talks. The opening will be conducted by the Xunta's Minister of Culture, Education, Vocational Training and Universities, Román Rodríguez, the rector of the USC, Antonio López, the director of the Office of Strategic Support and Planning of the Agency for the Technological Modernization of Galicia, María Bobillo, and the special commissioner for the Alliance for the New Language Economy of the Government of Spain, Cristina Gallach.

The special commissioner will also participate in the round table 'The importance of language technology for the society and the economy' , which will begin at 9:30 and will be moderated by the scientific director of the Research Centre on Intelligent Technologies (CiTIUS), Senén Barro. He will be accompanied by the former president of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing, Manuel Palomar; the director of the Galician Language Institute, Xosé Luis Regueira ; the director of the Text Mining Unit of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Marta Villegas; and the vice director of HiTZ ( Basque Research Center for Language Technologies), Germán Rigau Claramunt.

Pre-registration

Starting at 11:30 a.m. there will be various talks on the origin, current state and future of the Nós Project, by several researchers who are working on this initiative, both from CiTIUS and the Galician Language Institute, a research center that has just completed half a century of research in Galician linguistics and philology, as well as language technology in its application to Galician. With this Open Day, steps continue to be taken to advance the Nós Project, which has just entered its second phase thanks to the new financial injection of more than 600,000 euros. The new agreement will allow researchers this year to advance field work, design resource prototypes, experiment with the first demonstrators and create voice banks. which will be available to all citizens to facilitate, among other actions, that companies use Galician in their technologies.
