Research and Publications

Cortiñas co-authored “Mask-net: Detection of Correct Use of Masks Through Computer Vision” (presented at the LatinX in AI workshop of ICML 2021). In this work, his team built two convolutional neural network models (Mask-net and I-Mask-net) using transfer learning with a pretrained MobileNet backbone. They compiled custom image datasets (KLD with ~11,000 images and IMKLD with ~1,800 images) covering correct, incorrect, and no-mask cases for training and validation. The trained models achieved about 85% accuracy in classifying mask usage. This publication highlights Cortiñas’s expertise in deep learning and computer vision.
